Yet was my young heart so full of sorrow, that it overflowed its banks, and bitter tears were shed. 152 OUR FIRST GREAT SORROW. We buried little Freddy in the orchard where we loved to play. Some of our playmates, who knew him, and lamented his loss, came to see him for the last time, to mingle their tears with ours, and to aid us in committing his remains to the grave. It was at the evening twilight hour when we buried our pet. Wo raised a mound over his grave, covered it with green turf, and strewed it over with flowers. Then we set up a little pine slab, with an inscription upon it in rude letters, telling the name, and rehearsing some of the virtues of our Freddy, when we walked slowly, silently, thoughtfully, tearfully away. How desolate Freddy's cage looked for days and weeks after that! We could not bear to have it before our eyes, I remember, and so we removed it to a dark corner of the garret. This was our first great sorrow. Men with the weight of half a century upon their shoulders, and some of the snow of age beginning to settle upon their temples, might laugh at such a childish grief, were they to see it exhibited by some of their little friends. But Uncle Frank, albeit no longer a romping child, would look back upon such a scene, even now, as the burial of a cherished bird, with real, honest sorrow. Aye, and I do believe that, were I to see a group of boys and girls mournfully and lovingly committing their pet to the grave, I should want to be one of the mourners, and tell them I felt sorry for them.
